10 Simple Tips on How to Publish a Book
April 1, 2009 at 9:50 am

Promotion Tips
Bob Burnham asked:

The publishing world wants you to think publishing a book is tricky and full of pit holes to fall into. Not true! These simple 10 simple tips will help you publish your book quickly and easily, and the end result will be a professional product you can be proud of.

Tip #1 The first task to self-publishing is actually making a book out of your manuscript.

Here are just some of the decisions that go into transforming a manuscript into a book:

Cover design

Internal artwork and layout

Font, for example, Times New Roman or Arial

Type of binding, for example, spiral, ring, stitched, perfect, etc.

Hardcover or softcover

Book size (standard book size is 5.5" by 8.5")

Type of paper book is printed on

Color or black and white

Number of pages. It is generally easier for consumers to justify a book purchase if the book is over 100 pages.

While your printer can help you with a majority of these decisions by offering suggestions and examples it is helpful to go to a printer with a good idea of exactly how you want your book to look. Visit bookstores and find books that you want to model.

Tip #2 Understand the difference between publishers and printers.

POD Publishers

Unlike POD printers, POD publishers may take care of the extra costs of designing a book cover, editing your book, and obtaining an ISBN number. They can be a good option if you need less than 50 books because the price is generally lower than what you would pay for a POD printer. However, make sure that you read your contract carefully and that you fully investigate the POD publisher that you are considering. Some publishers require exclusive rights to your book.

POD Printers

POD printers are just that, printers. They do not invest in your product. They simply manufacture it. The cost can be a bit expensive and generally ranges from $5 to $10 per book, depending on your book’s specifics. POD printers can be a good and cost effective option if your book is nearing the end of its life yet you still have the occasional order trickling in. This way you can order one book at a time and it eliminates the possible expense of having to keep an inventory on hand. The print quality is usually good. Again, as with any company, read your contract carefully and make sure to investigate the company.

Digital Printers PQN, Print Quality Needed

This is a good option for the author that needs fewer than 2500 copies. It is cost effective, the print quality is good, and it normally takes less than two weeks to print.

Offset Printers.

When you need more than 2500 books, your best choice is offset printing. The cost will equate to about $1.25 per book for about 3000 books. However, the more books that you print, the less expensive your cost will be.

Tip #3 Don’t forget about distribution

The next thing that you will need to handle as a self-publisher is the task of distribution. It may actually be to your benefit to hire a distributor; however, most distributors take 65% of the profit. A distributor’s main purpose is to "sell" your book to bookstores and specialty stores.

Distributors also are able to sell your book to larger chain stores like Borders and Barnes and Noble. This can be to your benefit because it means that your exposure is much larger than sticking with smaller booksellers and specialty stores.

Tip #4 How are your customers going to order and pay for their books? Order

Decide how you are going to take orders by phone, fax, email, webstore, snail mail, or all of the above. Do you accept credit cards? How will you ship? How will you take returns, if at all? Mail order purchasing is an easy and efficient process once you have established a routine. However, shipping individual books can be expensive. Will you charge for shipping? Where will you store the books?

Tip #5 What are you going to call your publishing company?

The first thing that you will need to do, once your book is written, is to start your own publishing company. To accomplish this you will first need to decide on a name for your company. Experts recommend against placing your name in the title of the company because it makes you look like a beginner. Additionally, do you really want your name listed as both the author and the publisher?

Tip #6 How much are you going to charge? Pricing Your Book

Before you begin promotion, determine how much to charge for your book. The general rule of thumb is to charge 8 times what it cost you to produce it. Therefore, if it cost you $5 to produce the book, you’ll charge $40. However, you want to consider your market and how much they’ll be willing to pay for your book. It could be more or less than $40.

Tip #7 ISBN numbers. An ISBN number is not a requirement to sell a book yourself but it will make it easier to record your book with booksellers and it is a formal registration process that signifies that you are in fact a publisher. In short, it makes you look more professional. Additionally, most booksellers like Amazon, require an ISBN number.

Visit the ISBN website, www.isbn.org

Fill out the application. It costs $29.95 for 10 ISBNs and I have been told that it takes quite a long time to process, so have patience.

Tip #8 Library of Congress Number. This is a number that is assigned by the Library of Congress to a book. It can also be referred to as the Preassigned Control Number or PCN. Numbers are only assigned to books that will be added to the library. You can apply for a number by visiting www.copyright.gov.

Complete the application and then file for a number

Tip #9 Copyright Registration. The first step in registering your book is to print a copyright notice on your copyright page, usually the back of your title page. Your second step is to publish your book. Last, you will want to visit www.copyright.gov/forms/

Tip #10. Promotion tips. There are thousands of ways you can promote your book. Tackle them one or two at a time. If you jump in and try 10 different promotion methods/tools, things will get messy and you won’t be able to devote your full attention to each promotion method. Focus on one or two at a time.

Article Promotion Tips and Traps

A great way to get highly targeted traffic plus relevant one-way backlinks to your site is through writing and submitting unique articles. Submitting these articles to free article directories or other websites that accept article submission will reward your website with valuable visits and backlinks.

Your article submission will reap visitors, so make sure you keep your website content easy to read as well as relevant and useful to your viewers. When search engines decide who to give the highest ranks to, they look at and weigh a few different factors. These factors include links, but also content as well. Search engines have a tendency to place the websites with the best content at the top of the rankings list.

The whole reason to submit articles to directories in the first place is to generate a bunch of one way links pointing back to your site, which will in turn increase your daily traffic. Free article directories love your article submissions - if you give them an article/content they reward you with one-way links.

Make sure your articles are as effective as possible. Don’t forget to put your name at the end, and take credit for your articles. Place the URL correctly in the resource box in order for it to get counted properly - you wouldn’t want to be making all your submission efforts in vain.

Spend time when planning the short pitch that your resource box gives. Create a strong call to action so that people will want to click to visit your site - give them a good reason to click. If your resource box doesn’t sell the idea of visiting your website or engaging in your offer effectively, some of the benefits of your article and article submission will be put to waste.

When writing the article itself, follow a few simple guidelines. Don’t write in the third person narrative. Write the article as if you were directly talking to the reader. This makes it more personable, and will allow you to build a strong relationship with the reader. Give yourself credit when it’s due, if you’ve accomplished something that is worth mentioning, do it. You’ll want to create a positive image for yourself in the minds of the reader, you want their trust.

Always be sure to double check the links in your resource box. There’s nothing worse than getting a great article out there only to find out that the HTML was coded wrong so the link is broken.

Dropshipping as an All Profit Method of Business
April 1, 2009 at 3:21 am

Dropshipping tips
jaspal asked:

I first found out about dropshipping back in June of 2001 a little after I started a not-so-profitable business on eBay selling cell phone accessories and such. I saw dropshipping as an all profit method of business. You don’t pay for shipping. You don’t pay for inventory. You basically just advertise the product on auction websites such as eBay, take orders, collect the money, and pay the set amount for each item to the dropshipper keeping the remaining amounts for yourself as profits. I now realize that it is only that easy when you’re dealing with the right person.

I first started dropshipping with a guy named Chris. I was selling Nike Air Jordans on eBay. I saw that Jordans are real popular on eBay and people pay huge amounts for them. I’ve seen some pairs go for $1,000+. Chris only charged me $67 a pair. So, I basically just doubled the price and sold them on eBay for $134 a pair. I sold about 20 pairs of shoes within a week giving me a profit of $1,340. I suddenly became happy with the success I had because obtaining over $1,000 in a week at the age of 19 is pretty rare. So, I wanted to start putting up way more auctions so that I could make way more money. Unfortunately, this is when Chris became unreliable. He never returned any of my e-mails and never got back online. Plus, he only had shipped half of the 20 orders I had. So, I decided that I needed a replacement quick before I started to have some unhappy customers on my hands.

This now brought me to dropshipper #2. I talked to the guy about the situation and he said that he would be able to handle it. I paid him for the remaining 10 orders I had left and he shipped the shoes off to my customers. I respected the fact that he picked up right where my previous dropshipper had left off at and took care of business. So, I assumed that this guy was all about business and was a very reliable and legitimate dropshipper. So, I started to put up more buy it now auctions and these shoes were selling faster than I could put them up for auction. This is the unbelievable part. I had sold 250 pairs of shoes in a matter of 4 days. I collected over $40,000 in 4 days. That’s $10,000 a day! This came as an amazement to me especially since I was only 19 at the time. I’ve made some people’s yearly salaries in a matter of only 4 days. Little did I know though that I was in over my head. I got a little too greedy and started to splurge on money that wasn’t even mine yet; buying clothes, shoes, and even put a $1,000 down payment on a new car. My dropshipper shipped my first 30 orders only to find out that he had shipped off nothing but all wrong sizes and wrong colors. So, I had a lot of complaining customers. Some even went straight to PayPal to complain causing PayPal to limit access to my account. So, now I had over $40,000 sitting in my PayPal account that I had absolutely no access to and over 200 orders that need to be shipped off. So, my only option was to refund everyone their money back to get my PayPal account back to regular standing, which brought me to my next dilemma…

I spent almost $4,000 of the $40,000 I thought would be mine to keep. So now, my Paypal balance was negative $4,000 and I needed to come up with that $4,000 quick before PayPal took legal action to get that money. I thought the only way to get me out of this mess was by the same way that got me into this mess. This is what brought me to dropshipper #3.

I stumbled upon a guy named Jarell. I found him through a legitimate business website so I decided to sell enough pairs of Jordans to make up the $4,000 and then I’d call it quits because this was too much for someone so young. Everything went smooth and I was able to make the $4,000 using my girlfriend’s PayPal account. Unfortunately, PayPal then limited access to her account also finding out that she was linked to me. This then aggravated me because now I had 15 orders that I in no way could pay my supplier. If I had shipped to my customers it would bring more complaints and negative feedback which was very bad for business. That was then, this is now.

After reviewing my whole experience with dropshipping in hindsight, I realized all of the mistakes that I had made. For anyone who is looking into working with dropshippers, please pay close attention.

1. Before going into business with someone who is going to be dropshipping merchandise for you, be sure to get to know the person really well. Don’t go by instinct. Have a few converstations with the person before you start anything. Collect all methods of contact of the dropshipper for emergency contact.

2. I suggest that you do not start off having the dropshipper ship the merchandise to your customers. Order some of the merchandise for yourself and examine it thoroughly before you go into business. I started to recieve e-mails from angry customers stating that the Jordans were of terrible quality when I was told by my dropshipper that they were of authentic quality.

3. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. As stated previously, I sold 250 pairs of shoes in 4 days. Within those 4 days, I had to deal with about 600-700 e-mails which is almost impossible for only one person to deal with that also has school to worry about. Patience is the key to success.

These were a few of the mistakes that I made dealing with dropshipping. I had a price to pay for my mistakes. I owed $4,000 to PayPal and I had a $2,000 eBay bill that I ended up working during the summer to pay off. My purpose in writing this is for everyone considering going into business with a dropshipper to take precautions and use the tips I provided. I would also like to say that even though I had a bad experience dealing with dropshipping, that is not always the case. I know there are some people who have become successful and wealthy off of dropshipping.

Five years have passed since I began my journey in this industry. I finally did pay off all of my debts that summer and have made it my mission to educate and inform people of the scammers out there waiting to ambush the inexperienced and naive. I wrote this article because I don’t want anyone else to go through the experience that I did. There were times where I felt hopeless and bitter for falling into a trap that left me feeling depressed. Needless to say, I have learned from my soul-crushing mistakes and now make a decent living selling on ebay.

Forex Money Management - the Key to Triple Digit Gains
March 31, 2009 at 10:24 pm

Good money tips
Samuel Leslie Berkovits asked:

Most traders think forex money management is just placing a stop and it’s much more than that. Good money management can turn a losing system into a winner and mediocre system into one that makes triple digit gains.

If you want to win long term at forex trading, you need to defend what you have and keep losses small. As the old saying goes - to win you need to bet and you can’t bet if you’re not at the table! Obvious but true.

Most traders pay very little attention to money management - but it’s the cornerstone of your forex trading strategy’s success, so let’s look at some tips you can incorporate in your forex trading strategy and become a winner.

Leverage

The first point to keep in mind is don’t use all the leverage your broker gives you.

They will in many instances give you up to 400:1 and it’s tempting to use it all however, if you do you will blow your account out the water.

A good leverage is maybe 10 - 20:1.

Trading Frequency

Cut your trading frequency back.

Most novice traders simply trade too much and take low odds trades. The good opportunities don’t come around often and you need to be patient and wait for them.

I know traders who trade less than 20 times a year and make triple digit annual gains so - trade only when high odds trades present themselves.

Deciding Bet Size

How much should you risk on one trade?

Common wisdom often says 2% but for a small account this risk is so small it means 20 on 1,000 account. Well you won’t make much money doing that! Risk 10 - 20% of your account equity on any single trade.

Forex trading is all about taking calculated risks at the right time and making meaningful bets - if you don’t like risk don’t trade forex.

Diversification

If you have a small account and a good trade and you think can make big profits, don’t dilute its potential. Diversification is not guaranteed to reduce risk and in most instances dilutes gains.

Always Assume the Worst

Many traders think their risk reward is their stop minus their profit objective - but that’s a trader’s opinion nothing more. When entering a trade always assume the worst eventuality and from there, things can only get better!

The Biggest Mistake of Novice Traders!

In money management placing a stop is normally easy, where most traders go wrong is the way they trail it.

Most traders get so excited when they get a profit, they don’t want to let it get away and they immediately move their stop up to close and get stopped out on a normal counter trend swing. The market then immediately goes back the way they thought and makes thousands and their not in!

To make the really big profits, you must accept drawdown in the short term in your open equity, to bank the big profits. Look at any forex chart and you will see that the big trends last weeks, months or in some instances years and you need to hold them as long as possible.

A good way to do this is a key moving average and we like the 40 day MA, then look for trend line support or resistance just below it. It’s far enough back to keep you in the trend but close enough to protect you.

Forex money management is all about taking calculated risks at the right time.

It’s a fact that most traders try so hard to avoid risk, they take too little which guarantees they lose. The above money management tips if used correctly will balance the risk reward just right and lead you to triple digit gains.

10 Proven Tips for Making Money Online (part 1)
March 31, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Money Online Tips
David Jackson asked:

NOTE: This is part one a two-part series. In part two, we’ll examine tips 6 thru 10.

While there are a variety of factors that contribute to online success, no one can dispute the effectiveness of the following proven tips:

1. You must have a plan. The number one mistake that most people who attempt to make money online make is they don’t have a plan of any kind. There’s an age old proverb by Thomas Edison that accurately states: “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” Develop a well-thought-out plan for what you want to do and how you plan to do it - a roadmap to your goals if you will. Write it down, and refer to it often. Not only can you use it to monitor your progress, it will help keep you on track as well.

2. You have to work hard. Many people mistakenly approach making money online with the idea of making a quick buck - easy riches if you will. And while a rare few achieve instant gratification and realize success rather quickly, the vast majority get hit with a brutal dose of reality. Making money online is neither quick or easy. It often requires time, patience, discipline and hard work. There are no shortcuts. Famous philanthropist Andrew Carnegie once wrote, “anything in life worth having is worth working for.” Those are words I try to live by everyday.

3. You must be passionate. I am constantly amazed at how many people approach making money online without any passion whatsoever. Passion is like a high-powered furnace that exists deep inside of you. It just needs to be fired up. So how do you fire up your passion? Easy. Do things that you’re passionate about - things that you truly enjoy doing. Why? Because passion is a key component to success. It motivates you. It keeps you focused. It makes you determined to keep going against even the most astronomical of odds. It helps you find solutions to your problems.

It’s been my experience that people who are truly passionate about whatever it is that they’re involved with have a level of determination, discipline and commitment that most people simply don’t have. It has been said that “the greater someone’s passion, the greater their level of success.” I believe that to be absolutely true. If you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, you’re merely spinning your wheels!

4. You have to believe in what you’re doing. There’s an old saying that states: “faith can move mountains.” And while that may not necessarily be true in a literal sense, belief in yourself, your ability and what you’re trying to accomplish can indeed be powerful. Let me give you an example of what I’m talking about. This past summer Tiger Woods won his third U.S. Open championship and 14th major title.

It was an unlikely victory for Woods, who was physically handicapped because he played the entire tournament with a broken leg. Two days after winning the championship, Woods revealed that he would miss the remainder of the 2008 season because he was having major surgery on his leg. When asked by reporters why he jeopardized his career by playing with such a serious injury, Woods simply replied, “I wanted to win.” Now if that’s not having faith in your ability to get the job done, I don’t know what is. Bottom line: To make money online, you have to believe in what you’re doing!

5. You must follow-up with prospects. Did you know that the average e-commerce website has a conversion ratio of around 1 percent? That means 99 percent of visitors to your website will leave without purchasing anything. That’s why following up with your prospects is so important. If you’re serious about making money online, you absolutely, positively must collect your visitors names and e-mail addresses so that you can follow-up with them at a later date.

The most effective method of following up is with a well-written, informative newsletter that not only provides your subscribers with useful information, but skillfully promotes your products and services as well. An easy to use follow-up platform would be a service like Constant Contact.
