How Our Drinking Habits Affect Dehydration
April 5, 2009 at 12:06 pm

Popular Drink
Robert Rodgers asked:

A typical response to the brain’s signal to drink water is often the opposite of what our bodies actually need. We drink because of habit, ritual or taste, not because we are thirsty. The signal for thirst becomes grossly distorted.

We wind up drinking even more drinks that dehydrate our bodies when, in reality, our bodies are thirsty for life enhancing water. When we drink soft drinks or alcoholic beverages, we become thirstier and wind up drinking even more soft drinks or more alcohol. Sound familiar?

What Drinking Habits Contribute to Dehydration?

We drink soft drinks, sport drinks, energy drinks, vitamin waters, juice, milk, tea, coffee, and alcoholic beverages. These popular drinks may be enjoyable but are they providing the adequate body hydration that is the foundation of health and vitality? The answer is no.

Soft drinks, both colas and uncolas, have no real nutritional value. Acids are used to carbonate soft drinks and chemicals are often used to flavor these beverages. Damage to your teeth may occur. Bones may weaken with extensive use. Carbohydrates in soft drinks slow down the absorption of water in the body. Soft drinks promote weight gain. The diet soft drinks contain unhealthy sweeteners and additives.

Coffee and tea, both diuretics, tend to promote water loss. A diuretic is any substance that tends to increase the flow of urine, which causes the body to get rid of excess water. The term diuretic suggests that the kidneys are required to take more water out of your bloodstream even as you are taking water into your digestive system by drinking. If you add milk, sugar, or chocolate to your coffee or tea, the rate of water absorption is reduced even further.

Alcohol consumption dehydrates your body. Alcohol promotes water loss by depressing production of the anti-diuretic hormone called vasopressin. Vasopressin acts on the kidneys. It concentrates the urine by promoting the reabsorption of water and salt in the body. Vasopressin helps to regulate the concentration of fluids in the body. Interference with its function leads to an increased loss of body fluid from urination, which can lead to dehydration.

Alcohol induced water loss can also lead to the loss of minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, and zinc which are involved in maintaining fluid balance in the body, as well as nerve and muscle action.

Sports drinks do not hydrate better that water. They also do not quench thirst. What do they do? They give you flavor and they offer a quick boost of carbohydrates. They contain sugar and provide electrolytes that are lost with perspiration. Just like soft drinks, the carbohydrates in sports drinks slow down the absorption of water in the body. They may also contain chemicals that your body does not need.

Juices, which could be categorized as food, have carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes but are not the best thirst quencher. Juice also has fructose, a form of sugar, which reduces the rate that the cells can absorb water. The result is that cells are not hydrated very quickly.

Milk may provide some hydration, although the sugars in milk slow down the hydration process. In addition, many people are lactose intolerant. Lactose is the primary sugar found in milk and foods with milk. Intolerance means you cannot digest foods with lactose in them. Many people have digestive and gastric disturbances from milk, resulting in dehydration.

Vitamin waters contain vitamins, minerals and herbs that are advertised to do something extra for you. They are loaded with sugar for flavoring, contain chemicals, have electrolytes and are packed with over 100 calories per bottle. You are better off drinking pure water and taking a multiple vitamin supplement that you and your health care provider have determined is right for you.

The Bottom Line

Our bodies need water to remain healthy. Your best bet to maintain your health and energy is to acknowledge the truth: There is no good substitute for drinking pure, fresh water. Show your body a little appreciation. Give your body the fresh water it needs to remain healthy today.

Buying Designer Jeans - Some Thoughts
April 5, 2009 at 1:16 am

Popular Design
Alicia Taylor asked:

Popular designer jeans brands

There are a variety of brand names in the designer jeans sector. In general terms buying jeans here will be down to the brands that people like or aspire to and the style they want to wear. Diesel and Evisu jeans, for example, have established a strong market amongst younger shoppers whilst the Armani Jeans brand name appeals to all ages and offers classic styles with a designer look and feel. Lambretta jeans often prove popular with people looking for a certain ’street’ look.

Considerations to make when buying a pair of designer jeans

Some people like to stick with a tried and tested brand of jeans whilst others buy based on the style, design and look and therefore may not be that concerned by buying from one brand name. As well as having a lot of designers to choose from, shoppers also have to decide on other factors such as style, colour and materials.

For example, some people only like to wear button fly jeans whilst others like to have a zip. Some prefer a bootleg cut, some prefer a comfort fit whilst others like a straight leg or a slim fit. A lot of the decisions to be made will be down to personal preference although body shape obviously plays a part — some jeans brands simply don’t seem to look good on certain body shapes whilst others will fit just fine.

There is also a lot of choice when it comes for materials and looks. Colours with jeans range from black down to dark blue and then to light denim. Some jeans are distressed, some are stone-washed, some are faded and some are pre-treated to give a ‘dirty’ look. It is possible to create two completely different looks with two different pairs of jeans — one pair can make the wearer look smart-casual whilst another can make them look completely casual.

Getting the right quality and fit with designer jeans

With most designer jeans being more expensive than standard jeans it is important to think about issues such as quality before buying a pair. Luckily, quality is generally of a high level here — designers rarely put their names to poor quality materials and workmanship.

Buying jeans online is a popular way of getting hold of designer jeans at favourable prices but this can make it harder to ascertain fit. Some will use the high street as a glorified fitting room, trying on a pair before whizzing home to buy online at a discount. In practice, it is worth taking some time to research the jeans before you buy them to get it right. For example, take some time to read up on the detailing on the jeans. A good e-tailer will also list all of the measurements. It’s important to pay attention to these measurements as they will help ensure the perfect fit.

Remember that perhaps the easiest way in which to check the measurements is to compare them with the measurements of a pair of jeans that you currently own. This will show you how the jeans will potentially fit. Of course, if you are buying jeans from a favourite brand then you will already probably have a good idea as to how well they will fit.

Conclusion

The key factor to consider is how good the jeans feel when wearing them. Jeans should be comfortable to wear — if they are not comfortable then they will rapidly find their way into that dark, dusty section of your wardrobe! With so many choices on offer here, however, there is almost certainly a pair of designer jeans to suit.

Lego Star Wars Toys–made for One Another

Popular star
John Mowatt asked:

The Lego block of a familiar toy was very popular for several decades. Very versatile and fun to build with devotees have many adults as kids. The company was very far sighted in obtaining permission from the films of Lucas manufacture toys of Star Wars. The popular films come and go, but Star Wars is never popular with a cult around the world as follow. This series of toys was introduced in 1999 and has had many additions since then. The line of Lego toys of Star Wars began with the figures and vehicles from the trilogy (episodes IV-VI). At a later date and sets the new releases have been introduced to cover the earlier trilogy of prequel (episodes I-III). All the main themes of the series of films have been recreated. The characters are figures typical of the style of Lego with the heads and bodies of the usual square. The slight differences in color and the headwear and clothing to distinguish them from each other. The characters of Star Wars have a large variation in the type, size and figure head. Lego has decided to make special molds for the heads that are true to these characters. The mold completely unique and original have been generated for these figures. Darth Vader is a good example of this special treatment. The light sabers were also added to the line because it would not be complete without these weapons very well known. All well-known ships of the star and assorted other vehicles are included in the series. The millennium falcon is probably the most popular vehicle. The X-wing fighter, the Imperial AT-ST, the speeders and all of the fighters were included link. A number of sets of position by a number of films is also included to accompany the vehicles that were in the film. Lego has produced a variety of huge arsenal of Star Wars. Their line includes technical some of these items. Line techniques are more complex in construction, capable of more movement and - a - life more true that the standard Lego figures. The drawings in the final series of the collector are complex and large. The biggest Lego set ever to be manufactured, for example, the millennium falcon that has more than 5000 shares. This series of video games is definitely the best selling product ever made of Lego. These video games were enormous popular and were a hit with both the devotees of Star Wars and video gamers. The first video game was based on the prequel trilogy and the second game was based on the original trilogy. The two later games have been packaged together and sold as complete an edition of Star Wars. Toys Lego Star Wars, figures and other items are extremely popular with both adults and children. This is one of examples of really great success in the history of production of the toy.

How to Avoid Long Lines at Disney Land or Disney World
April 4, 2009 at 8:29 pm

World Popular
Dan Farrell asked:

One source of frustration and annoyance for many visitors at Disney land or Disney World are the long lines for the rides. You can literally spend several hours of the day standing in line to ride popular attractions. These lines can be avoided in one of three ways.

1. Get to Disneyland early. The lines are shorter in the morning when the park first opens. Instead of jumping in line for the first ride you see, head for the rides that you really want to ride the most popular rides. Make a plan or itinerary on what rides are most popular that you want to visit and schedule them. This has worked like a charm for my family.

2. Another option is to purchase Fast Pass tickets for the rides that offer them. Again, do this early to ensure that you get to ride those rides earlier in the day. You can also order tickets online or by phone. Call Disney and request a Fast Pass ticket or tickets for specific rides. A little planning and forethought go a long way to making your Disney Vacation an extra special one.

Side Note:

FastPass can be obtained from machines located near the rides that accept FastPass. This doesn’t mean that you get to immediately move to the front of the line. It is more like scheduling an appointment for the ride later in the day at which time you actually will move to the front of the line. In the meantime, you are free to go enjoy other sites and rides around the park.

When you obtain a FastPass ticket, you will be given a one hour time in which to enjoy the ride. For instance, your FastPass ticket may say 11am to 12pm. This means that you can show up and move to the front of the line between the hours of 11am and 12pm. You must have your Disneyland ticket in order to obtain a FastPass ticket.

At Disneyland, FastPasses are available for Indiana Jones, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Roger Rabbits Cartoon Spin, Autopia, Space Mountain, and Buzz Lightyear.

3. The third option to avoid long lines at Disneyland is to ride many of the popular rides later in the evening, while the majority of people are enjoying the entertainment. Disneyland or Disney World has nightly entertainment, and this is a good time to find shorter lines.

Of course, it will mean that you probably miss the entertainment, so if you can use one of the other options for shorter lines at Disneyland, you should probably do so.

Most visitors just wander around aimlessly but those with a specific plan on what rides they definitely want to visit and in the order of popularity will enhance the overall Disney Vacation.

Raising Kids Who are Popular With Their Peers
April 4, 2009 at 10:55 am

More Popular
Rita Offen asked:

As parents we want our children to be happy, and one of the most significant areas of their lives is that of friendships. Kids love to have friends, and, whatever age the child, it’s a delight to parents to watch their children happy in a friendship, playing games, sharing activities. It can be equally distressing when a child has difficulty either making friends, especially in new situations (it’s quite upsetting when we feel their loneliness), or when they have difficulty keeping friends. Children will invariably come home from school at some, or lots of times, in their lives, upset because they have fallen out with friends, have been ostracised from a group, or have been inexplicably treated badly.

There are ways that parents can raise their children to be popular with their peers, without the necessity of buying them the latest gizmos like fashionable clothes or electronic games. Parents can raise their kids to be confident, independent individuals. Such individuals are always popular, give or take a few jealousies that come along the way. Here are a few ideas:-

1. Children who are encouraged to be independent from an early age grow to be confident – they do not feel insecure when they meet new challenges like starting school or leaving their parents. Your encouragement can be in any area depending on their age. A small child can be encouraged to make a sandwich, put his coat on, whereas an older child can be given new responsibilities, say, cooking lunch, getting a paper round. The key point for parents is to refrain from giving a ‘helping hand’, no matter how tempting, because this does not allow them the space or discipline to help themselves.

2. Give your child your time (this is what he wants more than anything). He wants your time and cuddles, to feel loved. A child who loves himself learns to love others, and he learns love from you. When things are not going as well as expected in any other area of his life, at least he knows he is loved, respected and important at home. A child who is respected learns to respect others too.

3. Such love and respect helps to build a high self-esteem. As well as this, give your child the opportunity to try out different activities, so that she can find something she is good at, something she can excel at and enjoy, which will build her confidence in herself and her abilities.

4. A child who is confident is less likely to fall prey to bullies. Bullies tend to seek out children who are visibly less confident. In fact, being ‘nice’ doesn’t always work – a child, just like an adult, who sticks up for his values and is not a ‘push-over’ is usually popular and respected.

5. Teach your child to see things from others’ point of view, to see the other side of the story. For example, a child who complains her friend won’t play with her – there could be various reasons for this, like she feels she has been hurt, is jealous about something, or feeling unloved – children have complex emotions they cannot communicate to either friends or their parents. It’s hard for the egocentric child to comprehend such things, but you can at least make them aware there is always another side to every story.

6. As a parent, be organised, not just in your own life, but your child’s life. Little things, like having the right equipment for school, wearing suitable clothes for an activity, mean so much to a child. A child who stands out as the ill-prepared child can feel unconfident and be a target for ridicule.

7. When you meet your child’s friends, be nice! Ask them questions about themselves – be a popular parent.

As parents you have the responsible and admirable job of mentor and role model to your children, and a child who is strong and independent is well-equipped for the world of friendships, school and, indeed, life.

Would it make you happy to be really popular, or even a star?
April 4, 2009 at 10:10 am

In Truth there is Love asked:

Although I indeed prefer people liking me, I think to be extremely popular or even a star, would annoy me. You always have to live up to other peoples high expectations of you. You would not have peace if you go out of the house. People believe they can talk about you in groups etc.
Would you like to be a star and if why?
Just curious what your thoughts are.
